Eddie O'Gorman cut a lonely, mud-splattered figure as he stormed towards the finish of the Hardwick X-Stream cross country race on Sunday. But the Chiltern Harrier wasn't complaining. With his nearest challenger barely visible in the distance, O'Gorman had once again dished out a masterclass in off road running and scooped his second successive victory over the challenging six-mile course at the same time.
Aylesbury's Bearbrook Joggers running club and Whitchurch Cricket Club organised Sunday's race that takes competitors around a tricky course in the confines of Manor House Farm in Hardwick village.
The route for the 17th running of the Up & Running Aylesbury and Storm Records-supported race included four river crossings, running around muddy ploughed fields, across wet grassland and along farm tracks.
O'Gorman wasn't perturbed by the wetter-than-usual conditions underfoot though, and his finishing time of 34m 47s was almost two minutes faster that his club colleague Thomas Beedell could manage as he was soundly beaten into second place.
"I've done Hardwick six or seven times but today's race was definitely the muddiest I've ever experienced," O'Gorman admitted. "The conditions made it tough but I'm in good shape at the moment thanks to all the training I'm doing for the London Marathon and I always enjoy competing at Hardwick because it's a classic cross country event."
Ross Langley fought hard to take third place in a time of 37m 32s for Tring Running Club and he was some distance ahead of fourth-place man, James Hague who completed the course in 39m 00s. The top-six places were rounded out by Vale of Aylesbury's Andrew Rolt who was 12 seconds further behind in his distinctive 'Wally Man' fancy dress costume, while Owen Byrne was the first Bearbrook Jogger to reach the finish line in 39m 41s.
Slightly further back, Sara Luck headed the Senior Ladies field at the finish. The talented Havering Mayesbrook athlete scored a time of 41m 14s to place her more than three minutes ahead of second placed Connie MacMillan of Banbury Harriers. Sarah Hill of Tring Running Club tried hard to snatch MacMillan's placing of 33rd overall but ultimately finished 20 seconds shy of her rival in 45m 04s.
As well as lots of individual battles for position up and down the large field, there were also a number of important category and team prizes up for grabs. Heading the list of category winners was Andrew Rolt whose fifth-place performance ensured he took the spoils in the Male Vet 40 category, while Mike Bradley of Watford Harriers rolled back the years to impressively take the Male Vet 50 honours in 43m 21s - a time that was good enough to place him 21st overall. Also putting on an impressive show and scooping the Male Vet 60 prize was Geoffrey Smith of Banbury Harriers who finished 72nd overall in 48m 57s.
In the Ladies age categories, Maryvonne Hassall secured the Female Vet 35 honours in 51m 12s, while the Female Vet 45 prize went home with Susan Davies of Croft Ambrey Running Club. Her finishing time of 46m 45s meant she finished 52nd overall.
In the teams' categories, the blistering combined performance of race winner Eddie O'Gorman, second-placed Thomas Beedell, eighth-place Simon Beedell and Andrew Redington in 17th meant Chiltern Harriers walked away with the Men's team prize, while Bearbrook Joggers scooped the Ladies team prize, thanks to the combined pace of Linda Huxley, Helen Mulhall, Sandy Ridgeway and 15-year-old Josie Hassall who endured a tough first appearance at Hardwick but gave her all to finish 215th in 1h 06m 07s.
A total of 239 runners made it to the finish of the 2010 Hardwick X-Stream race, with only two entrants dropping out on the course.
With recent snow and ice leaving much of the Chiltern countryside awash with water, Sunday's Hardwick X-Stream cross-country race was always going to one of the toughest for years. However, local athlete Eddie O'Gorman failed to read the script. The Chiltern Harrier stormed around the claggy six-mile course to win in 32m 12s - and take his first-ever Hardwick victory.
Organised by Aylesbury's Bearbrook Joggers and Whitchurch Cricket Club, the Hardwick attracted an impressive entry of 261 athletes for the annual race over a challenging course at Manor House Farm in Hardwick. The route for the Up & Running Aylesbury and Storm Records-supported race was cut short by 500 metres after organisers ruled that one of the three water crossings was too deep to pass.
When the race got underway, O'Gorman - three times a runner up on the Hardwick - immediately hit the front with Paul Farmer of Ampthill and Flitwick Flyers keeping him company. The duo were inseparable for much of the six miles over ploughed fields, dirt tracks and grassland but O'Gorman's strength told in the end and he reached the finish 30s ahead of his rival to claim the spoils and the cash prize for being the top male finisher.
The class of O'Gorman and Farmer was illustrated by how far they finished ahead of third-placed athlete, Fabian Downs. The Chiltern Harrier was a full three minutes behind O'Gorman at the finish line.
Other athletes that were victorious in the men's category included Stephen Earley (Bedford Harriers) who scooped the V40 veterans' honours in 36m 17s, John Nelson (Alchester Running Club) who topped the V50 times in 38m 11s and Bearbrook Joggers' Brendan Cradden who was the fastest runner in the V60 category after clocking a time of 46m 42s.
The ladies category was just as competitive at the Hardwick and it was Bearbrook Joggers' Michelle Dublon who emerged victorious on 'home' soil to add to her success a day earlier at the final round of the Chiltern Cross Country League in Luton.
But her winning time of 44m 08s was only four seconds faster than her team-mate Maria Russell could manage, while unattached runner Chloe Oldfield marked her competitive off road debut by coming home third overall, a further 20 seconds behind.
In the veterans' categories, Laura Butt (Chiltern Harriers) took the V35 honours in 44m 53s, Jacqueline Grundy (Gade Valley Harriers) was the fastest V45 finisher in 50m 30s, while Hilary O'Shea (Abingdon Amblers) sealed the V55 category in 52m 11s.
The annual Hardwick X-Stream six mile cross country race held at Manor House Farm Hardwick on Sunday attracted a record 270 runners on a great sunny winters day. The thought of the three famous water crossings did not keep them away.
This was the 15th running of the event jointly organised by Bearbrook Joggers and Whitchurch Cricket Club and was won in fine style for the second year running by Thomas Beedell in the colours of Chesham based club Chiltern Harriers. Thomas clocked one of the fastest ever times over this course, 32mins 28secs, to beat his club mate Eddie Ogorman who crossed the finish line in 32.58. Paul Farmer from Ampthill & Flitwick Flyers also clocking a very fast time of 33.27 claimed 3rd place. Chiltern Harriers made sure of the mens team prize once again with Richard Quantrill 36.56(10th) and Roger Ellerby 38.18(18th).
The first lady home was Rosanna Iannone from The Vale Of Aylesbury AC who had a fine race to finish 38th overall in a great time of 41mins 12secs just ahead of Laura Butt (41.36) from Chiltern Harriers, with local Tring AC runner Alison Harding third lady home in 44.36.
Host club Bearbrook Joggers only had a limited amount of runners as most of the club were involved organising the run but they did have a great result in winning the ladies team prize for the second year running with Helen Mulhall leading them home in 47.48(108th) followed by Debbie Channer in 48.19(112th) with Linda Huxley 54.14(180th) and Deborah Bignall 58.12(200th) completing the winning team.

Our Hardwick X-Stream Cross Country race had a great entry this year with over 200 runners tackling the tough and very muddy 6 mile course with it's well known three water crossings. Winning runner was local Chesham based Thomas Beedell who clocked a fine 36mins 33secs running for Chiltern Harriers. He was chased all the way by Stephen Earley from Bedford Harriers (36.42) with Stephen Hartley (36.5)0 in 3rd place. Chiltern Harriers also took the mens team prize.
